Question and answers

customer service

There is a lot to consider, and the uncertainty can be huge.
Below, we have gathered and answered some of the most frequently asked questions.

Hearing aid

If the trade union you are a member of provides insurance for hearing aids, we require a receipt for reimbursement of this.

On this receipt, you should include your name, date of birth, personal identification number (p-tal), trade union, account number, and phone number.

You can send this to us at liv@liv.fo or by visiting us at our office at Kopargøtu 1 in Tórshavn.

Change of marital status

You should consider your policy in such a way that any potential death benefit aligns with your wishes.

Can I appoint my partner to have rights to my life insurance and pension, even though we are not married?

Yes, you can. If you are not married, you need to change the settings on your life insurance and pension so that the payout in the event of death goes to your partner instead of the next of kin.

Pension savings in Denmark

It is possible to transfer this savings back to the Faroe Islands. Initially, a tax of 60% will be paid to the Danish state, and then 40% will be transferred back to the Faroe Islands. Once this money is deposited into a pension scheme in the Faroe Islands, you can apply — via TAKS — to have the Danish tax refunded and transferred into your pension. If you have lived and paid taxes in the Faroe Islands while contributing to the Danish scheme, the entire tax will be refunded. If you have lived part of the time in Denmark, the refund will be proportional to the time you lived in Denmark. We are happy to help you check what the exact situation is in your case.

Payment due to death

The Probate Office notifies us of all deaths in the Faroe Islands. Upon death, the payment will be made to the person you have designated in the insurance. If the amount needs to be transferred to the estate, this will be done in collaboration with the Probate Office.

Disability Insurance

Disability insurance means that the payment is discontinued if the ability to work is reduced by 2/3 or more. The payment will stop 3 months after the disability is confirmed, and LÍV will pay this as long as the disability persists.

The maximum duration of this period depends on the terms of the insurance agreement. You can find the application for service under the forms section. Once we have received your application, we will request the necessary information from the hospital or your doctor so that we can process the case.

Payment due to serious illness

These medical conditions (diagnoses) are covered by the insurance. You can find the application for this service under the forms section. Once we have received your application, we will request the necessary information from the hospital or your doctor so that we can process the case.

Unions

LÍV works with most trade unions to provide insurance and pension plans for their members. Your insurance starts when you begin working and lasts until you reach the pension which at the moment is 67 1/2 years, or leave your job. If you leave before retirement age, you can continue your insurance with LÍV.

Group Incurance covers:
Death
Certain critical illnesses
Disability
Hearing aid

This insurance is tax-free and lasts until you turn 67 1/2 years old.

What does ‘gjaldskái’ mean?

Gjaldskái” means that the right to insurance continues, even if the payment stops. The payment for the insurance part will be offset against the accumulated value in the pension savings. Several trade unions have agreements that automatically provide a payment suspension (“gjaldskái”) for up to 1 year. Contact us if you are unsure or would like a more detailed explanation.

Why is a health certificate necessary?

A health certificate is used to ensure that all insured individuals are treated as equally as possible in terms of insurance coverage. Based on the information in the health certificate, we assess the risk and determine the conditions and premiums accordingly.

Regarding retirement age

We will contact you as the date approaches. At that time, we will explain how the payout is structured, and we will ask you where the money should be transferred.

Payout due to disability

You are entitled to this benefit if your work capacity is reduced by 2/3 or more. The payout starts 3 months after the disability is confirmed. You will find the application for the payout under forms. Once we have received your application, we will request the necessary information from the hospital or your doctor so that we can process the case.

Is there a difference between accident insurance and disability insurance?

Yes, these are two different types of insurance that do not replace each other.

Accident insurance covers accident events as specified in the insurance terms – such as ‘sudden external influence leading to bodily injury’ – i.e., not regular illness. You receive a lump sum payment if you suffer permanent damage from the event, and the payout is based on the extent of the injury and the insured amount.
Disability insurance covers both accidents and illness that result in a loss of ability to work for a shorter or longer period. The insurance is paid out monthly, often set as a percentage of your salary, usually until retirement age, at which point the pension is paid out
